Pixie Owlet
Nishita Rao is an interdisciplinary artist working at the intersection of poetry, visual art, and music. Her practice evokes critical examination of power, systems, and culture, expressed through a range of creative modalities. Rooted in research, education, and social justice, her work intersects disciplines of gender studies, critical theory, disability studies, anthropology, history and clinical sciences.
Her recent exhibitions include the Womankind Exhibits at New York Asian Women's Center, △ Nazariya Art Showcase at the San Francisco Disability Cultural Center and the Integrative NeuroArts Montage at Stanford University's Neurodiversity Summit.
ABOUT NISHI
Nishi's visual art collections include, "Civilizational Plurilogues", "Queering Identities", "AroAce Resonances" and "CathARTic Imprints", consists of intricate, hand-drawn and painted geometric folk art on tiles, canvases, magazines and cards.
Her poetry shows up in collections such as "Echoes in the Shadow" and "Noctivox". She employs an interrogative and philosophical voice to deconstruct cultural narratives and systems of power. Her writing is characterized by its philosophical, existential and inquisitive style.
As a vocalist in the musical project "Faunasonics", she explores impromptu, ambient soundscapes created in communion with animals. Drawing on a broad musical literacy that spans numerous languages to create a form of non-verbal, interspecies communication, this Carnatic-trained singer explores a novel soundscape as a therapeutic practice.
Across these diverse initiatives, Nishi's work is unified by a consistent exploration of dismantling and rebuilding, questioning the foundations of communication itself, be it verbal, written, visual, or sonic.
